Shash-maqâm is the classical music of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. It took shape during the 18th century, the Golden age of the court of Bukhara. It is composed of six large vocal and instrumental suites. The Maqâm Dugâh is one of these six suites, it is recorded here for the first time in its original style of performance: singers, lutes and fiddles. The most remarkable character of this music, played here by outstanding performers, is an intense expressiveness which encompasses drama, melancholy and festive joy.
