The Chinese classical opera, Kunqu, is born in the 16th century. It is the most elaborate and refined style of Chinese opera. No battle, no acrobatics as in Beijing opera, the most important are the feelings of the characters and the music based on flutes, strings and percussion instruments. The Peony Pavilion tells a love-story based on a dream. It is undoubtedly the most prominent work of this genre.
